Top 5 Ways To Stay Healthy On A Budget

Gym memberships? Cabinets full of organic food? Diet pills that are “guaranteed to work?” If you’re picturing nothing but dollar signs when it comes to staying healthy, it’s time to adopt a new outlook. Following a healthy lifestyle doesn't require spending a good portion of your paycheck each month. Here are some simple and inexpensive ways to keep yourself in good shape.

Walk Your Way to Good Health

All it takes is a 30-minute walk each day. You can even break up that half-hour into smaller segments, such as taking three 10-minute walks. Doing this on a regular basis can help you drop extra pounds, trim your waistline and lower your risk of developing serious conditions, like type 2 diabetes. Also, the combination of exercise and fresh air can help you sleep better at night and boost your mood.

Water, Water, Everywhere
Drinking enough water on a regular basis is one of the simplest and least expensive ways to stay healthy. The rule of thumb is to drink eight 8-ounce glasses a day, although the actual amount that’s best for you might vary a bit. Also, keep in mind that the rule of thumb is for all fluids you drink, not just water. Getting enough water helps you stay hydrated. It also flushes out toxins, keeps your skin healthy and carries nutrients to your cells. It can even help prevent you from gaining unwanted pounds by helping you feel fuller longer. Get a refillable water bottle to carry around with you throughout the day, and fill it up with tap or filtered water.

Buy Local and Save Big
Don’t fill up your shopping cart with pricey organic foods at your local supermarket. Check out farmer’s markets for fresh, locally grown and very affordable produce. If you plan ahead, you can buy enough to last you several months. Growing your own fruits, vegetables and herbs or joining a local co-op are other budget-friendly ways to keep your kitchen filled with fresh produce. Stock up on healthy staple items, like brown rice or whole wheat pasta, when they’re on sale at the grocery store. You don’t have to completely skip the more costly organic items. Learn how to make the most of coupons and special deals, so these items won’t eat up a lot of your grocery budget.

Don’t Skimp on Sleep

Your body needs sleep in order to recharge. Also, not getting enough sleep has been linked to higher risks of depression, decreased immunity and obesity. Most people need somewhere between six to eight hours of sleep per night to feel well-rested. Quality is important too. You won’t feel very rested if you spend the night tossing and turning. Minimize noise and make sure your room isn't too hot or cold, so you’ll be able to sleep comfortably.

Think Beyond Physical Health
Staying healthy isn't just about being in good physical shape. Your emotional health is equally important. Try to reduce stress or learn more effective ways to handle it. Treat yourself to a relaxing bath or do some leisurely reading at night or on the weekend. It’s ok to splurge a bit and pamper yourself from time to time, whether that means booking a massage, working on finally getting rid of those stretch marks or trying out a new hairstyle.
